From a University Kitchen to a British Home Fragrance Brand: The Story of The Aromatary

Every brand has a beginning.

For The Aromatary, it started with a university student, a love of fragrance and a simple idea: to create beautiful scents that could make a house feel more like home.

What began as a small experiment making wax melts on a stovetop would eventually grow into an independent home fragrance business, with candles, reed diffusers, room sprays, gifts and fragrances enjoyed in homes across the UK.

This is the story of The Aromatary.

Where It All Began

The Aromatary was founded by Juda in 2017 while she was at university.

At the time, the business was a very long way from the collection of home fragrances it offers today.

There was no large product range or extensive catalogue. Instead, Juda started experimenting with wax melts at home, making them on the stovetop and developing fragrances from scratch.

It was a small beginning, but it sparked something much bigger.

The more she experimented with fragrance, the more she became fascinated by the way scent could change the atmosphere of a room.

A beautiful fragrance could make a home feel warm and welcoming. A fresh scent could make it feel bright and clean. A rich, woody fragrance could create a completely different mood.

That idea remains at the heart of The Aromatary today.

From Wax Melts to Candles

As interest in the products grew, The Aromatary began to evolve.

Wax melts were the starting point, but candles soon followed.

The range continued to develop as new fragrances were created and new ways of enjoying them were introduced.

Today, The Aromatary offers a range of home fragrance products including:

  • Scented candles
  • Wax melts
  • Reed diffusers
  • Room sprays
  • Home fragrance gifts
  • Wash and lotion
  • Accessories and seasonal collections

While the product range has grown considerably since those early days, the original focus remains the same: creating fragrances that people genuinely want to live with.

Building a Brand Around Fragrance

One of the things that makes fragrance so personal is that there isn't one scent that everyone loves.

Some people are drawn to fresh citrus and green fragrances.

Others prefer floral scents.

Some want something warm, sweet and comforting, while others gravitate towards woods, spices, tobacco or deeper, more sophisticated fragrances.

That's why fragrance has always been central to The Aromatary.

From Fig Garden and Fiery Lemongrass to Smouldering Tobacco & Honey, Bergamot & Caraway and No.26, the collection is designed to offer different moods and personalities rather than simply one signature style.

The aim isn't just to make a room smell nice.

It's to help create a feeling.

Growing Beyond the Home

As The Aromatary grew, so did the opportunities around it.

The business expanded beyond direct-to-customer home fragrance into wholesale, corporate gifting, personalisation, favours, workshops and white-label manufacturing.

This opened the door for other businesses to work with The Aromatary and create their own fragrance experiences.

From independent retailers to businesses looking for branded gifts, bespoke products and private-label fragrance, the company has developed into much more than the small wax-melt business it started as.

The Importance of Making Things Well

Despite its growth, the idea of creating quality products remains central to the brand.

The Aromatary uses soy wax for its candles, rapeseed and coconut wax for its wax melts, and FSC-certified wooden wicks in its candles.

The brand also focuses on vegan-friendly and cruelty-free fragrances, recyclable or recycled packaging where possible, and responsible product development.

For a business that began with wax melts being made on a stovetop, those details represent how far the journey has come.

A Business Built Around Scent

There is something special about building a business around something as personal as fragrance.

Scent can bring back memories.

It can make a space feel familiar.

It can remind you of a holiday, a particular season or a person.

It can even change how you feel when you walk through your front door.

That's why home fragrance is about more than candles, wax melts or diffusers.

It's about creating an atmosphere.

And that is the idea that has stayed with The Aromatary from its earliest days.

From Small Beginnings to What's Next

The Aromatary may have started with a university student experimenting with wax melts on a stovetop, but the journey didn't stop there.

The business has continued to grow, develop new fragrances and explore new ways to bring scent into people's homes.

And perhaps that's the most exciting part of the story.

The Aromatary is still an independent brand with plenty of room to grow.

There are new fragrances to create, new products to develop, new businesses to work with and plenty more homes to fill with beautiful scent.

From a small experiment at university to an ever-growing British home fragrance brand, The Aromatary's story is ultimately a reminder that big things can start very small.

And sometimes, all it takes is one good idea — and the willingness to see where it can lead.
